SUMMARY

The Tsunami chapter of Class 8 deals with the inspiring incidents that took place when the Tsunami hit different parts of the world. The chapter comprises three parts. The first part includes stories from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It narrates the experiences of people who faced the wrath of the Tsunami. The first story is about a man named Igneous who was the manager of a co-operative society in Katchall. He woke up to the earthquake sensed by his wife and put the television set on the floor to save it.

However, the tsunami swept away his wife, two children, father-in-law, and brother-in-law. The second story is about a policeman named Sanjeev who tried to save the cook’s wife but got drowned along with her. The third story is about a 13-year-old girl named Meghna who survived by holding on to a wooden door and floating for two days. The last story is about a 10-year-old girl named Almas who climbed on a floating wooden log and fainted. She was later rescued and taken to the hospital.

The second part of the chapter tells a story from Thailand about an intelligent girl named Tilly. Tilly and her family were on the beach when they saw the sea rise slowly and making whirlpools. Tilly realized that these were signs of a Tsunami and warned her family. They returned to the hotel, which fortunately withstood the force of the Tsunami and saved their lives.

The third part of the chapter talks about the sixth sense of animals. It narrates how animals were able to sense the danger of the Tsunami and save themselves. For instance, in the Yala National Park situated in Sri Lanka, only two animals died while 60 visitors lost their lives. People noticed that three elephants ran away from the beach an hour prior to the struck of Tsunami. Another incident is also from Galle in Sri Lanka where two dogs refused to go to the beach for a walk and saved their master.

The Tsunami chapter of Class 8 is a reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and how they can affect lives.
